QUEEN'S PARK - The Ontario government congratulates the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) on the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the historic signing of Treaty 9, as the province continues to chart a new course with its new approach to Aboriginal affairs.

"I would like to congratulate the Nishnawbe Aski Nation on this important anniversary," said Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. "I would also like to thank the NAN leadership for working together with our government on our common goals and shared dreams for a better future for all children in Ontario."

Treaty 9, also known as the James Bay Treaty, was signed during the summers of 1905-06 and 1929-30 by the ancestors of today's Nishnawbe Aski Nation. The treaty covers the majority of Northern Ontario, spanning north to James and Hudson bays, west to the Manitoba border, and east to the Quebec border.

"Together, we are working on a new relationship based on co-operation and mutual respect," said David Ramsay, Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs. "I look forward to working with the Nishnawbe Aski Nation towards our shared goals for long-term positive change and a stronger north."

The centenary celebration will be held at Mishkeegogamang Ojibway Nation on July 12, 2005. At the event, Ramsay will present a special congratulatory message from the Premier.

"We are working together to ensure that the next 100 years bring a better future for all First Nations peoples, especially children and youth," said Ramsay. "Only through our combined efforts will we see northern communities sharing and contributing to the economic potential of Ontario."
